denote

“Denote” 是一个正式的动词，意思是指代、表示某事物，通常用于描述符号、词语或其他标记所代表的意义。它和“mean”（意思是）相近，但“denote”更正式，常用在学术、技术或文学场合。

用法示例：

1. Denote 表示符号、标记、单词等代表的含义

   • The word “rose” denotes a type of flower.
     （“玫瑰”这个词表示一种花。）

   • In mathematics, the symbol ‘π’ denotes the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter.
     （在数学中，符号“π”表示圆的周长与直径的比值。）

2. Denote 指定的特定意义

   • A red flag often denotes danger or warning.
     （红旗通常表示危险或警告。）

3. Denote 用于表述性质、特征

   • The term “cloud” in computing denotes a type of data storage and computing system.
     （计算机领域中的“云”一词表示一种数据存储和计算系统。）

相关词：

• Connote: 与“denote”不同，connote 表示隐含的、附带的意义或情感。例如，“home” 不仅指房子，还隐含了温暖、舒适的感觉。

用法上，denote 更注重字面或符号的直接意义，而connote 更关注词语或符号的情感或隐含含义。
